7 Common Types and Causes of Aggression in Dogs

aggression in dogs

Does your dog growl, lunge, and bare his teeth? Dog aggression can be a terrifying and hard issue for owners to deal. There can be many causes, and the most important thing to deal with this problem is finding the cause of such a problem.

Here are the most common types and causes of aggression in dogs:

1) Pain-induced aggression

This is one of the most common causes of aggression in dogs. If a dog, all of a sudden, starts showing signs of aggression, it may be due to a condition or disease, such as a brain tumor or rabies. Talk to your vet if you suspect your dog might be ill.

2) Genetics

Genetics can play a role in dog aggression. Some breeds are selectively bred, intentionally or unintentionally, to be more aggressive than others. However, genetics is not the primary factor in this dangerous behavior, sometimes chihuahuas can be more aggressive than pit bulls.

3) Resource guarding

Some dogs are very protective of their things, whether it is their food, bed, toys, or even trash, and they can become aggressive when someone tries to take it away from them.

4) Social aggression

This type of behavior can be presented when a dominant dog feels like his power has been threatened.  Owners can avoid this issue by rewarding good behavior to prevent struggles.

5) Fear

When dogs fear for their safety and can’t escape the situation, they are more likely to respond with aggression. It doesn’t matter if the threat is real or imagined.

6) Learned aggression

Just like a kid, if a dog gets what he wants after behaving badly, he will very likely repeat the same thing again, and this is known as learned aggression.

7) Establishing dominance

A dog may bite, growl, snap in an attempt to establish dominance. It’s more common with other dogs, but it can also happen to people.
