Americans certainly love dogs, and really, who doesn’t? America has the largest dog population in the world, with over 75.8 million dogs. The US has many laws regarding the ownership of certain dog breeds and animal welfare.
We made a list of the top 10 dog breeds in America, find out more below:
1) Labrador Retrievers
They are the most popular breed in America and the United Kingdom. Labradors are playful and love to be around people. Since they are so intelligent and easy to train, they are often used as guide dogs for blind people. Their average lifespan is 10 to12 years.
2) German Shepherds
German Shepherds are also very intelligent and smart, and they learn after only five repetitions. They have a double coat. The outer coat sheds all year around. In the past, they were used as sheep-herders to protect them from predators. They live for around ten years.
3) Golden Retrievers
Golden Retrievers are so warm and loving that they make excellent therapy dogs. They are also known for taking care of other animals, like cats, for example. These dogs are great swimmers, and they have water-repellent double coats that shed seasonally. Be careful, though, they can become really depressed if they’re left alone for long periods of time.
4) French Bulldogs
These dogs aren’t big barkers, and they are very affectionate and friendly. Keep them away from water, because they can’t swim. They have difficulty breathing, due to their shorter snouts, so it’s probably a bad idea to take them on an airplane trip.
Bulldogs are a really old breed, they were recognized as a breed back in 1886. They snore, drool, and fart a lot – and this happens because they have short snouts. They are very friendly and love kids, and they make an affectionate friend for life.
Beagles are loving creatures, and they are very susceptible to their owner’s mood. They love to smell things, and this is kind of how they perceive the world around them. It’s not a good idea to leave them alone, but if you need to do that, you should keep them distracted. If you want to be a beagle owner, be prepared for the barking, howling, and baying.
Most people think that poodles come from France, but they are actually from Germany. These dogs come in three sizes: standard, miniature, and toy. They are very smart, and they were trained in the past in circuses for performances. Poodles become very attached to their owners and can develop separation anxiety if left alone for too long.
Their origin is somewhat unknown, but it is believed that they come from Rome and were perfected in Germany. They were used to pull carts, herd animals, and guard homes. Rottweilers have powerful jaws, and their bite has the force of 328 pounds.
9) Yorkshire terriers
Weavers brought Yorkshire Terriers to England, and they started appearing in shows in 1861. The first therapy dog ever was a Yorkshire. They behave well in urban environments if appropriately trained, in fact, they are one of the most popular dog breeds in New York City.
These dogs are originally from Germany, and they come in many colors. Boxers are friendly, goofy, playful and energetic. It is unknown to many, but white boxers are born deaf and have many skin problems. Their lifespan is ten years, on average.
